The play
Explore outcome-based pricing where AI improves measurable utility or operational revenue, rather than charging per seat.
Emerald AI has raised $150 million in an oversubscribed Series A at a $1.05 billion valuation. Its software helps AI data centres reduce their power use when the electricity grid is under stress.
The more interesting part is how it gets paid. Emerald is not charging a standard software licence or per-seat fee. It takes a share of the extra power-sale revenue its system helps utilities create. In simple terms, if the utility earns more because a data centre can flex its demand at the right time, Emerald earns more too.
That model puts Emerald’s price directly against the customer’s upside. For a buyer, it can make the decision easier because there is less need to commit to a large fixed software cost before seeing value. For Emerald, it means revenue depends on proving that its software delivers measurable commercial results.
Business owners should pay attention to the structure, not just the funding round. Many AI products will struggle to justify another monthly software bill. The stronger offers will be tied to a result the customer already cares about, such as higher revenue, lower cost, fewer delays, or reduced risk. That requires clearer measurement and more trust, but it can create a much tighter relationship than a generic subscription.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting AI activity to the operational and financial measures that matter rather than treating it as a separate tool.
