The play
Add trace-level cost tracking for workflows, retries, and tool calls before expanding autonomous agents beyond pilot scope.
Most AI cost reporting still answers a simple question, “What did we spend this month?” That works until it doesn’t. One practitioner described a workflow where subagents could fan out without clear limits, creating spend that never appeared clearly in the top-line dashboard. The total cost was visible eventually. What caused it was not.
The more useful question is, “Which workflow, tool call, or retry pattern drove this cost?” That shifts cost tracking from an aggregate finance view to an operational view. If an agent calls the same tool 200 times, retries a failed step, or spawns more subagents than expected, you need to see that trace before the bill becomes a surprise.
For business owners, this matters as AI moves from small experiments into real workflows. A monthly dashboard can tell you something went wrong after the fact. Tool-call level tracking can show where the workflow design needs fixing, whether that is a missing limit, a bad prompt, an unreliable integration, or an agent loop.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where usage, workflow behaviour, and cost can be viewed together rather than treated as separate problems.
