HubSpot Launches Free AI Search Visibility Tracker

Most businesses know AI-powered search is changing how people find information. What most businesses do not know is whether their brand actually shows up in those AI answers — or whether they are being left out entirely.

HubSpot launched AEO Sensor on May 14 to give companies a baseline. It is a free, publicly accessible dashboard that tracks how AI answer engines are behaving across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and how different brands and content types are being cited in their responses.

What AEO Sensor Tracks

The dashboard surfaces three distinct signals:

Answer Engine Volatility — A daily score measuring how much AI search behavior is shifting. A high volatility reading means the platforms are changing their sourcing patterns, which can cause brands to appear or disappear from AI answers without warning. Understanding this volatility helps teams know when to investigate sudden traffic changes.

AI-Referred Traffic — Weekly aggregated data showing how much traffic websites are receiving from AI answer engines compared to traditional search. This is the most direct signal of whether AI search has become a meaningful acquisition channel yet in your category.

Citation and Visibility Benchmarks — Industry-level data showing which domains, content types, and specific pages are being cited by AI engines. You can compare your citation rate against competitors, see which content format is being picked up (blog posts, news articles, product pages, social content), and identify which specific pages are being referenced when someone asks an AI a relevant question.

Why This Matters Now

Traditional SEO tools are built around click-based search. They measure rankings, impressions, and clicks on results pages. None of that captures what happens when someone asks ChatGPT a question and the model answers directly from a cited source.

The goal in AI search is different. Instead of ranking on a results page where users choose to click, you are competing to be the source the AI references in its answer. Whether the model cites you or a competitor shapes how millions of queries get answered, often without the user ever seeing your site at all.

HubSpot built AEO Sensor after running answer engine optimization on its own brand and acquiring XFunnel, a company focused on this problem. The tool reflects what works in practice, which gives it more credibility than a lot of the theoretical AEO advice circulating this year.

Making it free and public matters. It means marketing teams can benchmark their visibility without a dedicated analytics budget, and it creates shared industry data that everyone can reference when building content strategy.

What This Means for Business

If your business depends on content marketing, thought leadership, or organic search to reach buyers, you now have two parallel channels to manage: traditional search and AI search. They are not identical, and optimizing for one does not guarantee performance on the other.

What tends to drive AI citation is grounded in familiar principles. Authoritative, specific, well-structured content on topics where you have genuine expertise gets cited more consistently. Vague, generic content designed to rank through backlinks alone tends to be ignored.

But the framing and format matter differently in AI search. Models tend to cite content that answers a specific question precisely rather than content that covers a topic broadly. The depth and directness of your answers matter more than the number of external links pointing to a page.

For businesses building a content presence in 2026, the first step is knowing your baseline. Are you being cited? In what contexts? By which platforms? AEO Sensor gives you that starting point at no cost.

The second step is auditing the gap between what your content says and what buyers are actually asking AI engines. That gap is usually where the real content opportunity sits.

This is a new category of measurement, not a replacement for existing analytics. But as AI search matures, the brands that start tracking and improving their citation performance now will be better positioned than those who notice the shift after the fact.
