Overview

Codeium is the autocomplete + chat assistant that pre-dates and now lives alongside Windsurf, also from the same team. It supports 40+ IDEs, from VS Code and JetBrains to Neovim and Emacs. The personal tier is free, the enterprise tier ships self-hosted and SOC2-ready, which is why it shows up in a lot of large engineering orgs.

Best for

Best for
Individual devs who want free autocomplete, and enterprises needing self-hosted

Use cases

  • Free autocomplete + chat across nearly every IDE in use
  • Self-hosted enterprise deploy for regulated industries
  • Drop-in Copilot replacement with no per-seat charge for individuals
  • Coverage for editors Cursor and Copilot do not support

Notes

Why it matters

Codeium is the volume answer in AI coding assistance. Free for individuals, SOC2-ready for the enterprise, and the only serious answer for editors that Cursor and Copilot have not reached.

How teams use it in production

A regulated industry team picks Codeium because it self-hosts. A solo dev picks it because it is free. Both end up with the same product.

What to watch

Whether Codeium and Windsurf merge their value propositions, or stay deliberately split. The current dual-product strategy needs explaining.

Pros

  • Genuinely free personal tier
  • Widest IDE support in the category
  • Self-hosted enterprise path with strong compliance posture
  • Same team now ships Windsurf for the agent surface

Cons

  • Autocomplete-first, less agentic than Cursor or Claude Code
  • Model quality is solid but not best-in-class
  • Brand split with Windsurf creates some confusion
