The play

Package AI implementation as a recurring managed service, rather than selling isolated training or one-time deployments.

OpenAI’s CFO Sarah Friar told investors something that says a lot about where AI money is actually flowing right now. Business revenue has now overtaken consumer subscription revenue at OpenAI, and the company’s total annual recurring revenue has doubled this year, from around $20 billion in January to $40 billion now. Business customer numbers grew 32% in July alone. There’s also a third pillar showing up, ad revenue, which is closing in on a $1 billion run rate, according to the original report.

Here’s why this matters if you run a company instead of watching one from the sidelines. For a couple of years the story was individual people paying $20 a month for ChatGPT. That’s a nice business, but it’s a consumer subscription with all the churn and price sensitivity that comes with it. What’s changed is that companies are now paying more, in aggregate, than all those individual subscribers combined. That’s not a marketing claim, that’s OpenAI’s own CFO reporting it to investors. Businesses are signing on for retainer style deployments, not just seat licenses for a chatbot.

For an owner, the signal is simple. The market is voting with its wallet, and it’s voting for AI that gets built into actual workflows and systems, not just handed to employees as a browser tab. That’s exactly the shift we’ve been telling clients to plan for, and it’s the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where the tools live inside your operations instead of sitting next to them.

The ad revenue detail is worth watching too. If OpenAI starts leaning on advertising the way other platforms have, it changes the incentives behind the product you and your team use every day.
