Anthropic reverses its planned Sonnet 5 price hike

AI Pulse · Business Models & Winners

The play

Reforecast model costs regularly, while keeping fallback models and usage controls as competition compresses pricing.

Anthropic had a price hike scheduled for September 1. Sonnet 5 was set to jump from its introductory rate of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens up to $3 and $15. That hike is now cancelled. The $2/$10 pricing stays in place permanently, according to the original report.

Why the reversal? Timing tells the story. Grok 4.6 and GPT-5.6 both landed price cuts the same week. Anthropic looked at that and pulled back its own increase rather than risk losing ground on cost. That’s a frontier AI lab flinching on a plan it had already announced, which is not something we’ve seen much of until now.

If you’re running a business that budgets around model API costs, this matters for two reasons. First, the immediate one: whatever you planned to spend on Sonnet 5 stays the same, at least for now. Second, and bigger, it tells you these prices aren’t fixed the way you might assume. When one major lab cuts, others move fast to match or beat it. That’s good news for anyone building AI into daily operations, because the cost side of the equation is more volatile, and more negotiable, than it looked a few months ago.

The practical takeaway is to stop treating model pricing as a locked-in line item. Build in room to shift providers or renegotiate if a competitor’s move forces another price change. This kind of cost tracking across models is exactly the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so you’re not caught off guard when the next price war hits. For now, Sonnet 5 users get to keep their current rate, and everyone else gets a reminder that this market is still finding its floor.
