The play

Monitor Meta litigation for advertising and compute-spending effects if customer acquisition depends on its ecosystem.

A trial that started August 18 could end up mattering more to Meta’s AI roadmap than any product launch this year. Attorneys general from 29 states are arguing that Meta built features into Instagram and Facebook specifically designed to hook minors, and doing that knowingly. The headline number floating around is up to $1.4 trillion in stated exposure. State lawyers themselves say a more realistic figure is closer to $200 billion. Either way, that’s a business-altering sum for any company, even one Meta’s size, according to the original report.

Here’s why this belongs in an AI watch and not just a legal one. Meta is in the middle of a spending race with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic on compute, data centers, and talent. That race runs on cash and on investor confidence that the cash is being spent wisely. A large adverse judgment, even well short of the eye-watering top-line number, would force Meta to divert capital toward settlements and compliance instead of GPUs and model training. It would also hand ammunition to anyone arguing that Meta’s consumer products carry legal risk baked into the business model, which affects how boards and investors think about the company’s ability to keep pace with rivals on frontier development.

For a business owner, the lesson isn’t about Meta specifically. It’s a reminder that regulatory and legal exposure around how AI-driven products treat users, especially younger ones, is becoming a real cost center, not a hypothetical one. If you’re building AI into products that touch minors or vulnerable users, the design choices you make today are the kind of thing that ends up in a courtroom exhibit later. Tracking that kind of risk alongside your AI tools is exactly the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so nothing sits in a blind spot until it’s expensive.
