The play

Compare Copilot models quarterly and negotiate against vendor lock-in by preserving portability.

Two days after xAI released Grok 4.6, Microsoft added it to GitHub Copilot. It’s now live across Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise tiers, sitting right next to Claude and Gemini as model options developers can pick from inside the same tool, according to the GitHub changelog.

Here’s why that speed matters more than the model itself. Microsoft isn’t betting Copilot on one AI lab. It’s building Copilot into a place where developers choose whichever model fits the job that day, whether that’s OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s, or now xAI’s. For a business owner, that’s actually good news. It means your dev team isn’t stuck if one vendor has a bad quarter, raises prices, or falls behind on quality. The tool stays useful because the model underneath it can change without your workflow changing.

This is also a signal worth watching if you’re not a coding shop. The pattern of “add the new model within days, let users switch freely” is becoming the standard way serious software vendors handle AI. If your own tools force you into a single AI provider with no way to swap, that’s a design choice, not a technical limit. It’s worth asking why.

For teams running multiple AI tools already, this kind of flexibility is exactly the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so you’re not manually juggling which model does what across five different logins. Grok 4.6 in Copilot won’t change your business by itself. But it’s one more sign that model choice, not model loyalty, is where the real advantage sits for companies buying AI tools right now.
