AI Pulse · ANZ AI Watch
The play
Watch AI features embedded in established products, but assess distribution and customer traction rather than funding labels.
Two ANZ startup raises this week are a useful reminder that AI is showing up in very different types of businesses.
Melbourne-based Superhero has raised $20 million toward a planned $30 million round, led by Salter Brothers, at a $176 million valuation. Part of that funding is earmarked for AI-powered investing tools within its existing share-trading platform. The core business is still share trading. AI may improve how customers research, assess or act on investment information, but it is not the whole product.
Auckland-based Azonic is closer to an AI-native application. It has raised NZ$1 million in a Blackbird-led pre-seed round at a NZ$6.1 million valuation. Its platform assists law enforcement investigations. That puts AI nearer the centre of what it sells, although it is still solving a specific operational problem rather than selling AI for its own sake. You can read the original report.
For business owners, the distinction matters. Most practical AI investment will likely look more like Superhero, adding useful capability to an established service, than a complete rebuild around AI. The question is not whether your company needs an AI label. It is where AI can improve a decision, reduce manual work, or help your team handle more volume without lowering quality. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting AI activity to the real workflows and priorities that run the business.
