The play

Align AI pricing to measurable usage or outcomes, and track unit economics before replacing seat-based contracts.

AlphaSense has crossed $700 million in annual recurring revenue, up 40% year on year. The more interesting part for operators is not the headline number. It is the pricing shift behind it.

The company built much of its growth on annual per-seat licences priced around $10,000 to $20,000. That model worked well, with revenue per customer rising from $28,000 to $66,000 over roughly three years. Now AlphaSense is moving parts of its offer toward consumption-based billing, alongside AI assistants built directly into PowerPoint and Excel.

That’s a practical change in how AI software gets sold. Seat pricing is simple to budget for, but it can limit revenue when a small number of people use an AI tool heavily. Consumption pricing lets vendors charge more as usage grows. For buyers, it can mean lower barriers to getting started, but also less predictable spend if teams adopt the tools quickly.

If you’re running a company, watch for this pattern across the software you buy. An AI feature included in an existing seat licence is one thing. A tool that bills by queries, documents processed, reports created, or agent activity needs active cost controls. Finance, procurement, and team leaders need visibility before usage becomes a surprise line item.

This is also the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking where AI is used, what it costs, and whether the business is getting a return.
