The play
Treat claims about competitors' underlying models as unverified, and avoid basing vendor decisions on anonymous technical speculation.
A technical blog post has raised a pointed question about Meta’s new Muse shopping agent. The post claims that, behind the scenes, Muse calls a model labelled “muse-special”, and suggests that model may be supplied by OpenAI rather than built by Meta. You can see the technical claim in the original report.
That is not confirmed. Meta has not said Muse uses OpenAI, and OpenAI has not commented either. So treat this as a lead, not a settled fact.
Still, it matters because it highlights how AI products are increasingly assembled. A company may own the customer experience, the data connections, the workflow and the brand, while using another provider’s model underneath. For a business owner, the question is less “whose model is it?” and more “what happens if that underlying provider changes pricing, access, quality or terms?”
If you’re putting AI into customer-facing processes, ask suppliers what models sit underneath their product, whether they can switch providers, and what controls exist around your business data. Those answers affect cost, reliability and risk far more than a polished demo does.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, keeping track of the tools, providers and dependencies your team is actually relying on.
