AI Skills Demand Grew 144% — and It's No Longer Just a Tech Problem

For years, “AI skills” was shorthand for software engineers and data scientists. That framing is now outdated. New data from the Bipartisan Policy Center shows that the fastest-growing demand for AI skills in the United States is no longer concentrated in the technology sector. Accountants, bankers, management consultants, and staffing professionals are now being asked for the same advanced AI capabilities that were once considered purely technical territory.

Job postings requiring AI skills grew 144% year over year as of mid-2026. Total job postings, across all fields, grew just 7%. The gap between those two numbers is the clearest possible signal about where the economy is heading.

Professional Services Are the New Frontier

The BPC analysis found that demand for AI skills across professional services industries, including employment placement agencies, accountancy offices, commercial banks, and management consulting firms, is growing at comparable or faster rates than in technology itself.

This makes sense when you think about it. Technology companies were early adopters because they built the tools. Professional services firms are now the ones deploying them at scale, and they need staff who can use them intelligently. A senior accountant who understands how AI models process financial data is more valuable than one who does not. The financial incentive to build AI skills has grown sharply. The wage premium for AI-skilled workers was 25% in 2024. It climbed to 57% in 2025. In 2026, it sits at 62%.

That is not a rounding error. It means that two workers doing the same job, one with demonstrated AI skills and one without, can expect to earn meaningfully different salaries, and the gap is widening each year.

The BPC data also shows that AI skills demand has spread across every US state, every metropolitan area, and even micropolitan areas. This is not a coastal or urban phenomenon anymore. A small accounting firm in a regional city and a law firm in a major metro are both advertising for roles that require workers to understand and apply AI tools.
