Switching

How to switch from HerdMASTER

A move usually involves exporting worksheet records, matching your headings and checking the imported history before you stop relying on HerdMASTER.

  1. 1

    Export your worksheets

Use HerdMASTER’s worksheet export menu, which ABRI documents. Export property and animal records, plus the history you want to bring: weights, joinings, calvings, treatments, movements, breeding values and sale lots. The import accepts worksheet CSV exports. If you cannot find the export menu or need help with what your account allows, check with HerdMASTER.

  2. 2

Load records with a test run

Start with a test run before committing the import. Load property and animal records, then the mapped history you want to bring across. The importer validates the supplied records before saving them, and the free version accepts animal records and mapped weights, joinings, calvings, treatments, movements, breeding values and sale lots. Keep real exports private and out of public code repositories.

  3. 3

    Review flagged records

Work through the import issues before you rely on the new database. Check animal identifiers, dates and record counts, and make sure custom report headings have been matched to the fields the import expects. The import requires exact animal tags or exact record names. Movement times need an explicit timezone. Correct mismatches in the source records or mapping, then test and load again.

  4. 4

    Run both side by side

Keep HerdMASTER available while you use Stud Herd for a short period. Compare identifiers, histories and record counts, and check that the records you rely on are present. Continue official submissions, genetic evaluations and hardware connections through your existing services, because the free base does not provide them. This gives you time to find gaps before you stop relying on HerdMASTER.

  5. 5

    Switch off HerdMASTER

When you have checked the imported records and are comfortable with the new process, stop using HerdMASTER for the work you have moved. Keep any separate official services and processes you still need. Maintain normal database backups and test recovery: the import has no automatic restore tool. Keep your HerdMASTER exports and records according to your own retention needs.

Where the real effort goes

The real work is usually matching your HerdMASTER headings to the import fields, agreeing how your own checks and breeding rules should work, and choosing how much history to bring across. Custom report headings need matching, and the free version accepts specific record types. If you have Enterprise DNA run the move, they handle the mapping and data move as part of the agreed scope.

Questions

Instead of HerdMASTER, answered

Is switching worthwhile at this subscription price? expand_more

HerdMASTER is A$950 a year excluding GST with all functionality included. We do not promise a lower total cost. The reason to build your own version is control over your farm records, custom checks and the way you work. Sam will discuss that against the value you already get.

Can we bring our HerdMASTER history? expand_more

Yes, through worksheet CSV exports. ABRI documents exporting a worksheet from its export menu. The free version accepts animal records and mapped weights, joinings, calvings, treatments, movements, breeding values and sale lots. Custom report headings need matching first. We check dates, identifiers and record counts before the switch.

Does this send our NLIS, NAIT or BREEDPLAN records? expand_more

The free version keeps local records and official receipt evidence. It does not send official submissions, calculate breeding values or connect yard equipment. Keep those processes in your current services. Enterprise DNA can scope and test the connections your farm needs as part of your custom version.

Does a clear treatment check mean an animal can be sold? expand_more

The check only reflects recorded treatment instructions and dates. It does not certify fitness for sale or slaughter. Missing history and destination requirements still need review. Your stock manager records the applicable label or veterinarian instructions and checks the official movement paperwork.

Can our team have a screen and someone to run it? expand_more

Yes. We can build a farm screen, adapt the record checks and manage the installation through Omni by Enterprise DNA. We agree the scope, data move and ongoing work with you. There is one setup fee, then a retainer.
