Microsoft just wrote a multibillion-dollar check to expand its partnership with Mistral, the French AI lab. The pitch is “sovereign AI”, a term that matters if you run a business in Europe or work in a regulated industry that can’t send data to US-only cloud infrastructure.

What Microsoft is really doing here is hedging. OpenAI has been its main bet, but OpenAI’s models run on US servers under US jurisdiction.
