The play

If you serve customers in China or use gray-market API access yourself, budget for supply-chain risk, those relay sites can vanish or get cut off overnight.

A quiet investigation turned up something most Western executives don’t know exists. There’s a thriving gray market for frontier-model API access, and it’s pulling 3.6 million monthly visits across just the top ten reseller sites, according to research published on Hacker News.

These “token relay” platforms buy API keys from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, then resell proxied access at steep discounts, primarily to buyers in mainland China where direct access is blocked or restricted. The sites run affiliate programs, daily giveaways, and customer support channels. They look and operate like legitimate SaaS businesses. The scale is the surprise. This isn’t a handful of hobbyists sharing keys. It’s organized, marketed, and apparently profitable enough to sustain real infrastructure.

For anyone running a company that uses these APIs, the implication is straightforward. Your usage data sits in your account, but tokens flowing through relay sites create a shadow economy the platform providers can’t fully see or control. If you’re building products on top of Claude or GPT-4, you’re competing with buyers who pay less and face fewer restrictions. If you’re evaluating AI governance or compliance, you now know there’s a parallel channel your policies probably don’t address.

The story got 92 points and 48 comments on Hacker News but zero mainstream coverage so far. That gap tells you something. The people closest to the infrastructure see it. The people writing checks often don’t. When you’re building an AI command centre that routes requests across multiple models, understanding where your tokens actually go, and who else is in the queue, matters more than most procurement teams realize. This isn’t a crisis. It’s a data point. But it’s one you didn’t have last week.
