The play
OpenAI cut API pricing up to 80 percent and added a fast premium tier, renegotiate contracts and test speed tiers for cost-sensitive workloads.
OpenAI just dropped prices on two of its newer models, Luna and Terra, by 80% and 20% respectively. The flagship Sol model stays at the same price, but now you can pay double to run it in a new “Fast Mode” that’s two and a half times quicker. CNBC confirmed the changes alongside several trade outlets.
This isn’t about making AI cheaper for everyone. It’s a targeted play for high-volume users, especially companies running coding agents and automated dev tools where token costs stack up fast. If you’re burning through millions of tokens a day building software or running agentic workflows, an 80% cut on Luna suddenly makes those workloads viable at scale. The Fast Mode on Sol is the other side of the coin: pay more per token, but get answers faster and move on. For latency-sensitive applications, that trade makes sense.
What this means for your business
If you’re experimenting with AI coding tools or thinking about automating parts of your development process, the math just shifted. Luna was already capable, but expensive enough that many teams stuck with older, cheaper models. Now it’s in play. Terra’s 20% cut is less dramatic, but still meaningful if you’re running it at volume.
The broader signal is that OpenAI is optimizing for enterprise workloads where speed and cost per task matter more than raw capability. If you’re building internal tools or automating workflows that rely on API calls, this is the kind of pricing shift that can tip a pilot into production. It’s also the sort of thing we build into an AI command centre, where you can route tasks to the right model at the right price point without rewriting code every time the landscape changes.
