AI Pulse · Under the Radar
Genspark released GenOffice as open source this week, a suite of Word, Sheets, Slides, and PDF tools with AI agents baked in. Within 24 hours, a solo developer forked the entire thing into HermesOffice, stripping out all cloud connections so it runs completely local. Same agentic tooling, zero phone-home.
The fork itself is brand new and unverified, so we don’t know yet if it actually works well or gains traction. But the speed of the reaction is the real story. Someone saw a useful AI office suite, immediately wanted a version that keeps all data on their own machine, and built it in a day. That tells you two things. First, the underlying code was clean enough to modify fast. Second, there’s real demand for AI tools that don’t send your documents, prompts, or edits to someone else’s server.
If you run a business in finance, legal, healthcare, or any sector where client confidentiality matters, this kind of fork is exactly what you should be watching. Cloud AI is powerful, but it introduces risk. A local option that does the same job, even if rougher around the edges, can be worth the trade-off. This is the kind of thing we design for in an AI command centre, where you control what stays internal and what touches external models.
The broader pattern here is that open source AI moves fast. A company releases something, and within hours someone else adapts it for a different use case. If you’re evaluating AI tools, check whether they’re open or closed, and whether a privacy-focused fork already exists or could. The landscape shifts daily, and the option you need might appear overnight.
