OpenAI just removed the message cap on free ChatGPT accounts and made its newest model, GPT-5.6 “Luna,” the default for everyone. Until now, free users hit a wall after about ten messages every five hours. That limit is gone. Starting the week of August 10, anyone can chat as much as they want, and they get a toggle to turn on deeper reasoning when they need it. The company confirmed the rollout targets the billion people it says use ChatGPT weekly.

This is a land grab. Google’s Gemini and Meta AI both offer unlimited free chat, and OpenAI is matching them to keep people from switching. The timing matters. If your team or customers already use ChatGPT casually, they now get current-generation quality without paying. That raises the floor for what people expect AI to do, and it means the free tool in their pocket is suddenly more capable than it was last month.

For business owners, this changes two things. First, if you have been paying for seats just to avoid the message cap, you may not need to anymore unless you rely on advanced features like voice or image generation. Second, your competitors and customers now have access to the same reasoning power you do, so any edge you had from simply using ChatGPT is shrinking. The question shifts from “Do we use AI?” to “How do we use it better than everyone else?” That is where workflow integration and custom agents matter.
