The play

If you run agents in production and don't have audit trails or access control, budget for governance tooling now before an incident forces it.

Obsidian Security just raised $85 million at a $1.1 billion valuation, and the numbers tell a story most companies haven’t figured out yet. They have over 100 customers paying more than $100,000 a year, 14 paying over a million, and 60 of the Fortune 500 on the books. That’s not pilot money. That’s retainer-scale spend for something enterprises clearly think they need but can’t build themselves.

The product is governance and oversight for agentic AI systems. Not the agents. The thing watching the agents. Companies are deploying tools that book meetings, draft emails, pull data, make recommendations. Those tools need permissions, access logs, audit trails, and someone has to answer when they do something unexpected. Obsidian built the layer that sits on top and tracks what’s happening, who approved it, and whether it matches policy. It turns out large organizations will pay serious money for that, and they’re not trying to spin it up internally.

This is a useful signal if you’re running a business that’s starting to use agents in any real capacity. The governance question isn’t theoretical anymore. If you’re giving an AI system access to customer data, internal comms, or financial records, someone is going to ask how you’re monitoring it. The fact that Fortune 500 companies are writing seven-figure checks for third-party oversight suggests the in-house path is harder than it looks. If you’re building out something like the Omni Command Centre, where multiple agents work across different business functions, the governance layer isn’t optional. It’s the thing that lets you scale without waking up to a compliance nightmare. Obsidian’s valuation is less about hype and more about enterprises realizing they need an answer to a question they didn’t have two years ago.
