The play

Expect continued spending on expert data and evaluation work, and price your AI services for downstream margin pressure.

Mercor just hit $2 billion in gross annualized revenue, up from $1 billion in February 2026 and $760 million at the end of 2025. That’s doubling in about four months, on a company that’s only two years old. Mercor isn’t a household name, but what it does matters to anyone watching where AI money actually flows. It’s a marketplace that hires expert contractors, think former doctors, lawyers, engineers, and coders, to produce and label the specialized data that foundation model companies need to train their systems. Over 90% of its revenue comes directly from AI labs paying for this contracted expert work.

A quick note on the number itself. This is gross marketplace volume, meaning the total dollars flowing through the platform before Mercor pays out its contractors. It’s not net revenue or profit margin, so don’t read it as Mercor’s take home pay. Still, the scale tells you something real.

Here’s why this matters if you run a business. Every time you hear that AI model costs are dropping, or that a competitor is undercutting you on AI-powered pricing, remember there’s a massive, fast-growing supply chain sitting upstream of that. Labs are spending aggressively on human expert labor to keep improving their models, and that spending is accelerating, not slowing. The pricing pressure you feel downstream is being subsidized by money moving fast at this layer. It’s a reminder that the AI cost curve isn’t just about compute, it’s also about how much labs are willing to pay real people to make their models smarter. Tracking these upstream signals is exactly the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so you’re not caught off guard when the pricing ground shifts under you.
