The play

Avoid betting on one model gateway, preserving direct provider access and exportable usage data.

Stripe just agreed to buy OpenRouter for more than 7 billion dollars. Three months ago this company was valued at a fifth of that. If you’re not deep in AI infrastructure, here’s what OpenRouter actually does. It sits between developers and AI model providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and DeepSeek, letting you call any of those models through one connection instead of building separate integrations for each. Right now 8 million developers use it to route requests across more than 400 models.

Stripe already handles billing for a huge chunk of the internet. By buying the layer that sees every AI request going out to every major model, it now has visibility into who’s using what, how often, and at what cost, across the entire AI provider landscape at once. That’s a strong position. Whoever controls the gateway can eventually control the metering, the billing, and the pricing packaging for AI usage, no matter which model wins the underlying race between OpenAI, Anthropic, and the rest.

For business owners, the direct impact today is small. You’re not using OpenRouter yourself, most likely. But this tells you where the money is moving. The real value in AI right now isn’t just the models, it’s the plumbing that tracks usage and turns it into invoices. If your business is building any kind of AI-powered product or service, expect billing and usage tracking to get more standardized, and possibly more expensive to route through, as one company starts owning that layer. This is exactly the kind of shift we track for clients, and it’s the kind of usage visibility we build into an AI command centre at Omni, so you’re not caught off guard when the plumbing under your AI tools changes hands.

This deal is reported, based on the original report, and terms could still shift before anything closes.
