The play
Explore the plugin ecosystem in a sandbox, but approve plugins individually and isolate credentials, tools, and model access.
DeepSeek’s new Harness project is attracting a lot more than GitHub attention. Since its 13 August release, the MIT-licensed agent runtime has drawn more than 1,100 community-built plugins. The project is also reportedly still adding stars at roughly 19,854 per day, although stars are a signal of interest, not proof that companies are using it in production.
What makes the plugin count more useful is how Harness is designed. Its models, tools, sessions, sandboxes and user interface are all handled as plugins. In plain terms, that means developers can swap or add parts of an AI agent setup without rebuilding the whole system around one fixed vendor design. A community plugin ecosystem can quickly create options for connecting models, internal tools and different working environments.
For business owners, this is a trend to watch rather than a reason to rush into a new platform. Open, modular AI tooling can reduce dependence on a single provider, but it also creates a governance job. Someone still needs to decide which plugins are approved, what data they can access, how they are tested, and who owns support when something breaks. The project details are available in DeepSeek’s GitHub repository.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where teams can track emerging tools alongside the controls needed to use them responsibly.
