The play
Australian founders should assess OpenAI credits and Codex access against existing tooling, but avoid switching platforms without migration and usage-cost analysis.
OpenAI is putting real money and attention behind Australian startups. It has distributed more than A$5.5 million in startup credits to local founders, and says it has tripled the credit available per startup. Eligible founders can receive up to US$50,000 in credits, alongside 10 free ChatGPT Business seats and access to Codex. It also brought more than 150 founders together for a Founder Day event in Sydney.
This matters because AI capability is becoming easier for small Australian companies to test before committing serious cash. Credits can fund early product experiments, internal tools, customer support workflows, or data analysis without a large upfront technology bill. The free Business seats also put AI into the hands of a broader team, not just one technical founder. That can speed up learning, but it also means companies need clear rules around data, approvals, and where AI is actually creating value.
OpenAI says Australia is already a top-10 global market for developers using its platform. That signals a direct push into our region, and more local founders will be building businesses on OpenAI’s tools. For established operators, the useful question is not whether to chase startup credits. It’s whether competitors can now test and launch AI-enabled services faster than you can.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving leaders a clear view of where AI is being used, what it costs, and what results it is producing.
