Debian has chosen a middle path on generative AI. After a two-week vote with nine competing options, its developers approved a “Responsible Use of Generative AI” position rather than banning the tools outright.

The practical rule is simple. AI can assist with code or documentation, but the human submitting the work remains fully responsible for it. That includes quality, accuracy and legal compliance. You cannot point to the tool when a release contains an error, copied material or a security issue. The contributor owns the outcome. You can read the voting result in Debian’s General Resolution.

That is a sensible model for most companies. The useful question is not, “Do we allow AI?” A blanket ban often pushes people to use tools privately, without oversight. The better question is, “Where can AI help, and who checks the work before it reaches a customer, a system or a decision?”

For an owner or operator, this means setting clear accountability at the point work is approved. AI can draft a customer reply, summarise a contract, write a report or help a developer produce code. But someone named and qualified still needs to review it based on the risk involved. A social post and a payroll calculation should not have the same approval process.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, making it clear which AI-supported work needs review, who owns that review, and where exceptions need attention.
