The play
Trial finance agents on invoice processing and reconciliation, starting with exception-heavy workflows and strong approval controls.
Auckland fintech Sterling has raised NZ$3.8 million in a Blackbird-led round to automate the repetitive work that sits inside many finance teams. Its focus is practical: invoice processing, bank reconciliation and month-end tasks. The company also has backing from angels with experience at Trade Me, Pushpay, Xero and Vend, and plans to use the capital to pursue enterprise customers across the US, Australia and New Zealand, according to the company funding report.
For an owner or operator, this matters because finance administration is still full of work that is structured, recurring and expensive to get wrong. Matching transactions, chasing invoice details and getting month-end reporting ready can consume capable people who should be looking at cash, margins and decisions instead. AI agents in this area are being built to handle the workflow, not just answer questions about it.
Sterling is also a useful local signal. There are plenty of generic AI tools, but vertical AI companies are going after specific business functions where the data, rules and process are well understood. Finance is an obvious target because the return can be measured in hours saved, fewer errors and faster reporting. The real test will be whether these tools fit into existing accounting systems and earn trust with finance teams.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting AI activity to the operating work that actually needs to move.
