"Marketing engineer" pitched as the next $1M/year AI-native role

Greg Isenberg frames a growth-side analog to the forward-deployed engineer: someone who builds AI agents that find customers, write outbound, test ads.

The play

Train a growth operator to build and monitor customer-finding agents, with weekly experiments tied to pipeline and acquisition costs.

The idea is simple. Instead of paying someone to manually run email outreach, ad tests, audience research and follow-ups, a company hires a “marketing engineer” to build AI agents that do that work continuously.

Greg Isenberg’s thesis is that this could become the growth-side equivalent of a forward-deployed engineer. The role would sit close to revenue, but its main job would be building and improving systems. One agent might identify likely buyers. Another could draft outbound messages. A third could test ad variations and feed the results back into the system. Over time, the operator is not just managing channels. They’re designing a marketing machine that gets better each week.

For business owners, the useful question isn’t whether this becomes a $1 million role. There’s no named company or revenue evidence attached to the claim yet. The more practical question is where your marketing still depends on repetitive manual work, and whether an AI-driven workflow could handle the first pass with human review.

That could mean faster testing of offers, more consistent prospecting, or less time spent pulling campaign data together. It also means the best marketing hire may increasingly be someone who understands customer acquisition and can build reliable AI workflows, not just someone who knows how to operate a single platform.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where customer signals, campaigns and operating workflows can be monitored and improved in one place.
