A credible developer says Astra regresses on coding

Not every new AI model is an upgrade for every job. Armin Ronacher, the creator of Flask, says he’s moving back from GPT-6 Astra to the previous model for software engineering work. That doesn’t prove Astra is broadly worse at coding. It’s one experienced developer’s report, not a market-wide result. But it matters because the loudest model launches often create an assumption that newer means better across the board. In practice, a model can improve at some tasks while becoming less reliable, less precise, or simply more frustrating for others.

If AI helps write code in your business, don’t treat model upgrades as automatic. Keep a small set of real tasks that reflect your work, such as fixing a bug, explaining an unfamiliar codebase, writing tests, or reviewing a pull request. Run the old and new model against the same tasks before changing team defaults. Track output quality, review time, and how often people need to correct the result.
