A new open-source project called BankMCP is connecting personal bank accounts to AI assistants such as Claude and Ollama through open banking. It runs as a self-hosted, read-only MCP server, meaning the user hosts it themselves and the AI can access account information without being given permission to move money. The interesting part is not that an AI can read a bank balance. Finance apps have done that for years. The shift is that MCP, the connection standard increasingly used by AI tools, is moving into personal financial data. In practical terms, this could let someone ask an assistant questions across their accounts in plain English, rather than logging into several banking apps and building the picture manually.

It appeared only a day ago, has no press coverage yet, and is already climbing GitHub trending at around 111 stars per day. That does not prove it will become widely used, but it is an early signal worth watching. Once AI assistants can securely read business and personal financial data, the useful workflows are obvious: cash position checks, spending reviews, exception alerts, and faster answers to basic finance questions.

The caution is equally obvious. Bank data is sensitive, and “read-only” does not remove the need to understand where data is hosted, which permissions are granted, and what an AI tool may retain. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, with the controls and visibility needed before connecting critical company data.
