The play
Audit free features driving retention before moving them behind paid tiers, and communicate replacements clearly.
TiVo plans to end its free automatic commercial-skipping feature in November and replace it with a paid premium option, according to the original report. On the surface, this is a small product change. In practice, it is a familiar business model move, taking something customers already see as part of the deal and putting it behind a new price tier.
That can work, but it carries real risk. Customers do not assess a new paid feature in isolation. They compare it with what they had yesterday. If commercial skipping was a reason they chose TiVo, the change can feel less like added value and more like a price increase. The company now has to prove that the premium tier offers enough beyond the old free feature to justify the charge.
For business owners reviewing pricing, this is the caution. Before moving an existing feature into a premium plan, identify who uses it, why they value it, and what they will do if it disappears. A paywall works best when it funds a clearly better service, not when it simply charges for familiar functionality. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking customer signals, product usage, and the commercial impact of decisions before they become expensive surprises.
