The play
Treat AI vendors as high-risk dependencies, requiring breach disclosure, repository isolation, and tested access controls in contracts.
A researcher has published a detailed account of an alleged compromise of OpenAI’s internal repositories, using a heap overflow combined with an SSO configuration issue. The post has drawn strong attention, reaching 441 points and 189 comments on Hacker News at the time of reporting. You can read the researcher’s writeup.
For a business owner, the important point is not the technical mechanics. It’s that AI suppliers can become part of your security perimeter. Your team may use an AI tool for documents, code, customer support, analysis, or internal knowledge. That means the vendor’s identity controls, software security, and incident response matter alongside your own.
A heap overflow is a type of software flaw that can allow unintended access or control when memory is handled badly. SSO, or single sign-on, is meant to make access easier to manage. But if it’s configured incorrectly, it can also create a path into systems that should be protected. Chaining two weaknesses together is often where the real risk sits.
This also extends a wider run of security incidents involving AI vendors this week. Don’t treat that as a reason to stop using AI. Treat it as a prompt to know which tools hold sensitive information, who can connect them to company systems, and what access can be removed quickly if something goes wrong. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving operators a clearer view of AI tools, access, and risk across the business.
