Claude Code can now read AGENTS.md, a file also used by Codex and other agent tools. The update sounds small, but it matters because teams can carry more of their agent setup between tools instead of rebuilding it each time. Claude announced the change in its changelog.

For a company using AI coding agents, switching costs are not just subscription fees. They include the work of documenting how an agent should operate, what it should know about a codebase, and how your team expects it to behave. Providers still compete on model quality, speed and price, but shared formats make it harder to trap customers behind proprietary setup work.

The firms that keep their AI instructions, workflows and operational context in reusable formats will have more choice as the market changes.
