The play
Differentiate trust-based services with transparent data policies, human accountability, and customer-controlled settings rather than vague privacy promises.
OpenAI’s ad monetisation plans now appear to reach beyond showing ads inside ChatGPT. A reported cross-site tracking mechanism, described as an ad collector, suggests the company may also be gathering signals about what users do on other websites. You can read the details in the original report.
For business owners, this matters because the economics of AI products shape the trust conversation. An ad-subsidised model has a different incentive structure from a paid software or service model. If user activity and behavioural data become part of the advertising system, customers may ask harder questions about what information is collected, where it goes, and whether it influences what they see.
That does not mean every AI tool with ads is automatically unsafe, or that paid tools are automatically private. It does mean your team should stop treating “AI” as one category when assessing vendors. Ask what data is collected, whether tracking extends outside the product, how advertising is separated from business data, and what controls your staff have.
For firms selling trust-based retainers, this creates a clear contrast. Privacy, data handling and commercial incentives are becoming part of the offer, not just legal fine print. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so leaders can see which tools, data flows and policies sit behind their AI use.
