The play
Measure basket size and repeat purchases from shopping assistants, not just clicks, when evaluating retail AI investments.
Kroger says its AI shopping assistant is associated with larger customer baskets, according to the original report. That matters because it moves the AI conversation beyond demos, productivity claims, and vague promises. Here is a large retailer pointing to a commercial outcome that every operator understands, customers buying more in a single transaction.
The important word is “associated.” We do not yet know how much basket size increased, what products drove the lift, or whether the assistant caused it on its own. Still, this is a useful signal. An AI assistant that helps customers find items, complete a meal plan, or remember what they need can influence revenue at the point of purchase. That is a very different use case from deploying a chatbot simply because competitors have one.
It also pushes back on the narrative that AI shopping tools will mostly be blocked, limited, or become a fight between platforms, as seen in the Amazon-Muse discussion. Customers and retailers will adopt these tools when they solve a practical problem and produce measurable commercial results. For business owners, the question is not whether you need an AI assistant. It is where an assistant could reduce customer friction and create a metric you can watch, such as order value, conversion rate, repeat purchase, or support volume.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting AI activity to the business measures that tell you whether it is actually working.
