AWS exec says agents need to leave the pilot stage

The play

Move promising agents from pilots into one governed production workflow, with named owners, measurable outcomes, access controls, and incident procedures.

AI agents are moving from impressive demos to a tougher question: can they run safely inside the business every day? An AWS executive has argued that enterprises need to move beyond proof-of-concept projects and put agents into production with proper governance, echoing the view that this is an ongoing operational commitment, not a one-off pilot. You can read the original report.

That distinction matters. A pilot can work with a small data set, a narrow task and a team watching every output. Production is different. The agent may touch customer information, internal documents, business systems and decisions that affect staff or clients. Owners need clear rules for what it can access, what it can do without approval, who is accountable for its outputs, and how issues are spotted and fixed.

The practical move is not to deploy agents everywhere. Pick a repeatable process where delays, manual effort or missed follow-up are costing the business, then define the controls before rollout. Track whether the agent actually improves the process, not just whether it produces convincing responses. If it cannot be monitored, reviewed and adjusted, it is still a pilot.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where useful agents sit alongside the oversight needed to run them responsibly.
