The play

Protect expert staff from uncontrolled agent requests by routing intake through quotas, scheduling, and clear prioritization rules.

Researchers are starting to face a new kind of inbox problem. According to Nature’s report, automated AI agents are sending requests for researchers’ time and money at a scale that is putting pressure on academic workflows. It’s an early example of what happens when agents can act cheaply and repeatedly on behalf of many people or organisations.

The issue isn’t that every request is bad. The problem is volume, and the effort required to sort useful requests from low-value or automated ones. When sending a request becomes almost free, receiving, checking and responding to it still takes human time. That burden lands on people already doing specialised work, with limited capacity to review proposals, answer messages or assess funding-related approaches.

Business owners should pay attention because the same pattern can show up anywhere AI agents are used to contact customers, suppliers, candidates or partners. An agent that can send hundreds of messages, submit forms or pursue follow-ups may look efficient from the sender’s side. From the recipient’s side, it can create noise, distrust and more work for staff.

The practical question is not just, “Can our AI agent do this?” It’s, “What happens if everyone else’s agent does it too?” Companies will need clear rules for agent activity, approval steps for higher-impact actions and ways to identify what deserves a human response. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where automation is visible, governed and tied to real operational priorities.
