The play
Frame governance around accountable owners, permissions, and testing, so failures lead to design fixes rather than vague blame.
A widely shared essay is pushing back on the idea of “rogue” AI agents. Its central point is simple: agents do not independently decide where they get deployed, what systems they can access, or how much authority they have. People make those choices.
That matters because calling an incident a rogue-agent problem can make accountability vague. If an agent sends the wrong message, exposes information, approves something it should not, or takes an action outside expectations, the useful questions are about the design around it. Who gave it access? What instructions and limits were set? Was there approval before high-impact actions? Who was watching the output? The essay has clearly struck a nerve, reaching the top of Hacker News with 321 points and 236 comments. Read the original report.
For business owners, this is a better way to assess AI risk. Don’t ask whether an agent might “go rogue.” Ask what it is allowed to do, what data it can see, and where a person must stay in the loop. Start small with low-risk work, set clear boundaries, and review exceptions before expanding access. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, making ownership, permissions, and oversight visible rather than assumed.
