The play

Review consent, retention, and data-sharing practices with counsel, since weak consumer-data controls can create enormous liability.

Meta has been ordered by a New Mexico court to pay $25 billion in penalties in a case tied to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The order follows a jury finding that the company misled state residents about how it collected and safeguarded user data. A judge set the penalty after the jury found more than 43 million violations of New Mexico’s unfair practices law. The court filing said the state was awarded $219.5 billion, but the penalty was reduced to $25 billion. CNBC reports that interest will accrue at 15% a year until it’s paid.

For owners and operators, the point isn’t that every data mistake leads to a penalty this size. It’s that how a company describes its data practices, and whether its actions match those promises, can carry serious financial consequences. The judge said Facebook didn’t conduct the comprehensive investigation it had promised after the Cambridge Analytica revelations. Meta criticized the ruling and said it expects to prevail on appeal, so the case may continue.

For owners and operators, this is a reminder to review how their teams track data handling and describe it to customers.
