The play
Wait for access, pricing, and independent workflow tests before deciding whether the new model merits a switch from your current tools.
OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, available starting today in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users, and through the API for developers. The company describes it as a model for visual reasoning and computer-based tasks, such as interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms, and editing videos. Its announcement says standard API prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra’s.
For a business, the practical question isn’t whether a new model sounds capable. It’s whether it can handle a real task accurately, at a cost and speed that make sense. OpenAI reports improvements over GPT-5.6 Terra on several benchmarks, including computer use, factuality, and coding. Those are the company’s test results, not a guarantee of how Terra will perform on your own documents or software. Teams should check access, pricing, and performance against a contained workflow before relying on it. The Hacker News discussion reached 187 points and 92 comments, a sign of interest, not proof of business results.
If you’re comparing models across workflows, OpenAI lists standard API rates of $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, and $5 per million output tokens. The company says these standard prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra’s, so teams can estimate the volume of a task and test whether the model does the work well enough to justify that spend.
