The play
Track AI usage beside time saved, quality, and revenue, but do not mistake retail-priced consumption for cash cost or proven savings.
Anthropic’s internal use of Claude was valued at more than its monthly employee compensation costs in April, excluding stock awards. That comparison uses the prices Anthropic charges customers for Claude, not the cash the company actually spent on AI. Business Insider says the figures came from Anthropic’s IPO filing, and that by September the value of internal AI use had risen more than 250-fold since January. Business Insider’s report makes an important distinction: this is a measure of usage at retail prices, not proof that AI costs more than salaries.
For a business owner, the useful question isn’t whether AI usage is bigger than payroll on paper. It’s what the usage is doing for the business, and whether that value can be measured against its actual costs. Anthropic’s figures make that a practical issue, not just an accounting detail. Leaders should look beyond usage totals and ask what AI contributes, and whether that can be measured against actual costs.
