How to choose

How to choose a Xplan alternative

  1. 1

    What drives the bill?

Check what your agreement counts, including access for advisers, paraplanners and client services. On Enterprise, check which modules your team uses each week against the modules on your invoice. Iress quotes Xplan privately, so compare any alternative with your own bill and the parts of the service your practice relies on.

  2. 2

    Who owns your records?

Find out where your client information sits and whether you can keep it in a database your business owns. Your records include client details, service levels, fee arrangements, advice files and file notes. Make sure you understand what can be exported and what support is available to bring your records across.

  3. 3

    Can it follow your rules?

Your review dates, fee renewals, advice stages and licensee policies may not match another practice’s setup. Check whether you can shape the fields and rules around how your business works, and whether those rules are written down where you can read them. Ask how the system flags a breach and what remains your responsibility.

  4. 4

    What does switching involve?

Ask which records can be brought across and how they will be checked. The free version imports an Xplan client list export, with a test run first. Fee arrangements, open advice and file notes come across separately. A full extract from Iress carries everything, and Enterprise DNA maps it when building your version.

The option that fits

A version built around your practice

Enterprise DNA builds your own version around the way your practice runs, brings your Xplan data across and runs it for you. Your records sit in a database your business owns, and your rules can be written down where you can read them. The managed version has one setup fee, then a monthly retainer, with no charge per adviser or per module. There is also a free version you can run yourself.

Questions

Xplan alternatives, answered

How much does Xplan cost compared with other options? expand_more

Iress publishes no public Xplan price and quotes it privately. It sells Essentials, Advice Toolkit and Enterprise, with modules chosen on Enterprise. Compare an alternative with your own invoice. Enterprise DNA’s managed version has one setup fee, then a monthly retainer, with no charge per adviser or module. The free version costs only hosting and the agent you run it with.

Can I move my client records out of Xplan? expand_more

The free version imports an Xplan client list export, with a test run first. Fee arrangements, open advice and file notes come across separately. A full extract from Iress carries everything. Enterprise DNA maps that data when building your version, so the scope of the move depends on the records you need brought across.

Will an alternative also handle modelling and research? expand_more

The free version holds the client file, review cycle, fee consents, advice files, complaints and CPD. Cash-flow modelling, research data and platform feeds stay in the tools you use for them. Enterprise DNA can connect your version to those tools, and many practices keep a separate modelling tool.

Who is accountable for compliance in an owned system? expand_more

Your licensee and advisers remain responsible, as they are now. The system checks your records against written rules and identifies breaches. It does not back-date a consent or write the reasons for advice on its own. Your licensee policies can be added as rules you can read.
