Google just announced plans for a second-generation chip called Frozen v2, and the real story isn’t the chip itself. It’s what happens when you control both the hardware and the models running on it.
Most AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, rent compute from cloud providers or buy Nvidia chips. They design models, then hope the hardware keeps up. Google can do something different. They’re building chips specifically tuned to their own models, then designing future models with those chips in mind. That’s a feedback loop competitors can’t replicate easily.
According to the original report, Frozen v2 aims to run AI models more efficiently, which translates to lower costs per inference and faster response times. For a business owner, that matters because inference cost is often what makes or breaks an AI project at scale. If Google can serve results cheaper and faster than rivals, they can undercut on price or pocket the margin.
The vertical integration also means tighter control over the entire stack. When you’re evaluating AI tools, you’re often choosing between speed, cost, and capability. A provider that owns the silicon can optimize all three in ways a pure software company cannot. This doesn’t make Google automatically better at every use case, but it does give them a structural edge.
For operators building AI into workflows, this is a reminder that infrastructure choices ripple through to performance and cost. You don’t need to pick hardware yourself, but knowing which providers control their stack helps you predict where pricing and capability will move. This is the kind of strategic layer we build into the Omni Command Centre, so you’re not guessing which platform will still make sense in six months. The chip wars aren’t abstract. They shape what you can afford to run and how fast it runs.
