Anthropic just flipped a switch that tells you where AI coding tools are headed. Starting August 14, Claude Code’s “auto mode,” which lets the agent run tasks without asking permission at every step, becomes the default for all users. The company announced it’s no longer billing Pro, Max, and Team tiers for the extra safety-classifier tokens the feature consumes, and it’s backing the move with numbers from a 1,053-person study.

The study found auto mode caught 89% of harmful actions, while human review alone caught 13.6%. Team and Enterprise users running auto mode also shipped roughly 25% more pull requests than those who didn’t. That’s not a small margin. It means developers are finishing more work, faster, because the tool doesn’t stop and wait every time it wants to write a file or call an API.

This matters because Anthropic is choosing throughput and measured autonomy over the human-in-the-loop model most enterprise software still defaults to. The safety classifier runs in the background, the agent keeps moving, and the user sees results instead of permission prompts. It’s a bet that the right guardrails let you move faster, not slower.
