Ads are filling the "thinking..." spinner

At least five independently-built services (IdleAds.dev, IdlePay, IdleDev, Claude Code Ads, Kickbacks) have launched in the last few weeks, all doing.

Ads are filling the "thinking..." spinner

The play

If your product has user-facing wait time, test sponsored status messages, but protect trust and measure abandonment.

Here’s something worth clocking even if it never touches your business directly. In the last few weeks, at least five separate teams built the same tiny tool. IdleAds.dev, IdlePay, IdleDev, Claude Code Ads, and Kickbacks all do one thing. They swap out the “thinking…” spinner in coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex for a sponsored ad, then split that ad revenue with the developer, usually somewhere between 50 and 75 percent.

A tweet went around claiming “Claude paid me $1,548.33 to wait for its replies,” which made it sound like Anthropic was handing out cash. That’s not what’s happening. Anthropic isn’t paying anyone. This is ad revenue-share from a third-party plugin, and the number reflects ad income, not a payout from the AI company. The tweet overstated it, and it’s worth saying that plainly.

What actually matters here isn’t the hype line, it’s the pattern. Five different builders, working independently, landed on the exact same idea within weeks of each other. That’s not a coincidence, it’s a signal. When you get that kind of convergence, it usually means everyone can suddenly see the same gap at the same time. In this case, the gap is: your AI tools sit idle for seconds or minutes at a stretch, millions of times a day, across millions of screens, and nobody had priced that attention until now.

You probably won’t install one of these. But if you run any kind of software, internal tool, or workflow with a wait state, ask whether that dead time has value you’re currently throwing away. It’s the kind of margin most people don’t even think to look for, and it’s exactly the sort of thing we build into an AI command centre, where idle moments get put to work instead of wasted. Small pattern, real lesson.
