Google just open-sourced a compiler called HEIR that could change how you think about sending sensitive data to AI models. The idea behind it is homomorphic encryption, which lets a model run inference on data while it’s still encrypted. The server doing the work never sees the actual content, just the scrambled version, and it hands back a scrambled answer that only you can unlock.
This has been possible in theory for years but too slow and clunky for real use. HEIR is Google’s attempt to make it practical. They’ve already demonstrated it on fraud detection, network-intrusion detection, and hotword detection, which are exactly the kinds of tasks where you want AI help but really don’t want raw customer or security data sitting on someone else’s server. Four peer-reviewed papers back the approach, and four hardware partners are already building on the toolchain, so this isn’t just a lab demo.
For business owners, the practical upside is this. If you handle sensitive data, whether that’s financial transactions, health records, or internal network logs, you’ve likely had to choose between using AI tools and keeping that data fully private. Homomorphic encryption starts to remove that tradeoff. It means a vendor or cloud provider can run a model against your data without ever being able to read it, which matters a lot for compliance, client trust, and plain risk management.
This is still early. It’s a compiler and a research direction, not a plug-and-play product you install tomorrow. But the fact that real hardware partners are already working with it suggests this moves from research to production faster than most cryptography advances do.
