IBM signs an OpenAI partnership less than a year after its Anthropic alliance

The play

Build a multi-model enterprise plan and prioritize integration, governance, and consulting capability over loyalty to one model vendor.

IBM just signed a formal partnership with OpenAI, and it’s worth pausing on the timing. Less than a year ago IBM struck a similar deal with Anthropic. Now IBM Consulting is standing up a dedicated OpenAI practice, training and certifying its consultants on the OpenAI stack, and folding GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work into IBM Consulting Advantage, its main delivery platform. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, according to the original report.

Here’s why this matters beyond the logos. IBM running both the Anthropic and OpenAI relationships through the same consulting channel tells you the competition has shifted. It’s no longer really about which model is smarter. It’s about who gets to sit inside your company as the trusted advisor deciding which model handles which job, how it gets deployed, and how it gets billed. IBM wants to be that advisor for both camps at once, which is a smart hedge for them and a signal for you. If a firm the size of IBM won’t bet its consulting business on one model provider, you probably shouldn’t either.

For an owner or operator, the practical takeaway is simple. Don’t build your workflows so tightly around one AI vendor that switching costs you a rebuild. The value is increasingly in the layer that sits above the models, the systems that route the right task to the right tool, keep your data secure, and let you swap providers without starting over. That’s exactly the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so the model underneath can change without your operations grinding to a halt.
