The play

Expect compute capacity constraints, and diversify infrastructure suppliers before planning critical AI workloads.

Anthropic just signed a 20 year deal with Riot Platforms, a company that used to make its money mining bitcoin. Riot is leasing 191 megawatts of its Texas campus to Anthropic for a base price of $9.1 billion, and that figure could climb to $16.1 billion with extensions. The first capacity goes live in December 2027, according to the original report.

Here’s why this matters even if you never touch a GPU. AI labs like Anthropic need enormous amounts of electricity and physical space to run their models, and that kind of infrastructure takes years to build. Bitcoin miners already own huge power hookups and land, because mining coins is basically the same problem: lots of cheap power, lots of cooling, lots of space. So instead of building from scratch, Anthropic is renting from a company that already solved that problem for a different industry. This deal is also happening as Anthropic gears up for an expected IPO, and locking in two decades of compute capacity is the kind of move that makes a company look stable and serious to future investors.

For a business owner, the takeaway isn’t about bitcoin or Texas real estate. It’s that the AI tools you use every day, from chat assistants to automation platforms, run on physical infrastructure that’s becoming a competitive resource. Labs are racing to secure power and space years in advance, which tells you compute costs and availability will keep shaping what AI companies can offer and how they price it. If you’re planning to build AI deeper into how you run your operations, this kind of long term infrastructure commitment is worth watching, and it’s the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre so you can see where the bottlenecks and opportunities actually sit, at Omni Command Centre.
