OpenAI confirms ads land on European free tiers this month

The play

Audit European users' plan choices and privacy expectations before relying on free ChatGPT for customer-facing work.

OpenAI is putting ads in front of free and Go tier users in Europe starting later this month. This covers the EEA and Switzerland. If you or your team are on the free plan, or the cheaper Go plan, ads are coming. Paid tiers stay clean, no ads there.

The targeting is limited on purpose. OpenAI says it will use conversation topic, a coarse location, and device type. No personalization based on your history, no chat memory feeding the ads. That’s a deliberate choice, likely built around GDPR consent rules that are still being finalized on the infrastructure side, according to the original report.

For business owners, the real question is who on your team is using free ChatGPT for actual work. If someone’s drafting client emails or brainstorming strategy on the free tier, they’re about to do it with ads sitting next to the conversation. That’s a distraction at best. At worst, it’s a signal that free AI tools are moving toward the same ad-supported model as everything else online, which means the “free” version becomes less useful over time and the paid version becomes the real product.

This also matters if you’re thinking about how AI tools fit into your operations long term. Ad-supported free tiers are fine for casual use, but for anything tied to client work or sensitive business info, you want tools where the incentive structure is clear and you’re the customer, not the product. That’s part of why we think about AI tooling as infrastructure rather than an app you bolt on, and it’s exactly the kind of tradeoff we map out when we build a client’s setup into an AI command centre.

Nothing here changes what the models can do. It changes who’s paying for them, and how.
