Deloitte quantifies the agentic-AI readiness gap

The play

Prioritize data quality, governance, and system integration before scaling multi-agent pilots across departments.

Deloitte just put a number on something a lot of owners already feel in their gut. In a survey of more than 500 US business and IT leaders, 74% said they expect nearly half their processes to be redesigned around AI agents within four years. That’s a big bet on where things are headed. But only 5% said their processes are highly prepared for that shift today, and just 15% have actually scaled multi-agent adoption across different functions, according to the original report.

That gap between expectation and readiness is the real story. It’s not that leaders doubt agentic AI is coming. It’s that most companies haven’t done the boring groundwork to actually use it well. Deloitte points to three blockers: messy data foundations, weak governance and trust in how agents make decisions, and the cost of integrating agents into existing systems. None of that is exciting to fix, but it’s exactly what determines whether an AI agent helps your business or just adds a new layer of risk.

For an owner or operator, the takeaway isn’t “go buy agents now.” It’s “go find out where your data and process gaps actually are before someone hands you a shiny agent tool and you plug it into a mess.” If you don’t know which processes are clean enough to hand to an AI agent, and which ones would just amplify existing chaos, you’re not ready yet, no matter what the four-year timeline says.

This is exactly the kind of readiness gap we think about when we build out an AI command centre for a business, mapping where your data and processes actually stand before layering agents on top. If you’re planning further out than that, this is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so the groundwork gets sorted before the agents show up.
