Two companies that don’t talk to each other just shipped the same idea within weeks of each other. Microsoft released a skill-recorder desktop app that watches you complete a task on screen, clicks, narration and all, then turns that recording into a reusable agent skill through GitHub Copilot CLI. Anthropic did the same thing inside Claude Cowork in late July, with a feature called “Record a Skill.” Neither company copied the other. They landed on the same answer independently, which usually means it’s the right answer.

Here’s what it means in practice. Right now, if you want an AI agent to handle a task the way your business handles it, you write instructions, hope the agent interprets them correctly, and tweak endlessly. This flips that. You just do the task once on screen, narrating what you’re doing and why, and the tool builds the reusable skill from watching you. Teach it once, the agent replays it forever.

For an owner, this changes who can train your AI tools. It’s not just the technical person anymore. Your best salesperson can record how they qualify a lead. Your ops lead can record how they close out a job. The knowledge that used to live only in someone’s head, or in a training document nobody reads, becomes something an agent can actually run.

It’s early days for both tools, and neither is proven at scale yet. But when two unrelated vendors converge on the same workflow this fast, it’s worth paying attention to. This is exactly the kind of capability we’re watching closely, and it’s the sort of thing we build into an AI command centre, where recorded skills become part of a system your whole team can draw on, not a one off trick on someone’s laptop.
