Visa, Mastercard, Solana and Circle back a new "Agentic Payments Alliance"

The play

Track emerging agent-payment standards now, and require clear identity, authorization, limits, and dispute processes before allowing agents to transact.

Visa, Mastercard, Solana, Circle and more than 25 other companies just formed something called the Agentic Payments Alliance. The goal is simple to state and hard to build: shared rules for how an AI agent proves who it is, gets permission to spend, and stays inside the lines regulators care about. Think of it as the plumbing under every demo you’ve seen of an AI agent booking a flight or ordering supplies on its own.

Right now those demos work because someone typed in a credit card number ahead of time or set up a narrow workaround. There’s no common standard for a business to say “this agent can spend up to this amount, on these categories, and here’s how we verify it’s actually acting on our behalf.” That’s what this alliance is trying to set, according to the announcement.

For an owner or operator, this matters less today and more in about a year. Once agents start handling real purchasing, whether that’s restocking inventory, paying vendors, or managing subscriptions, you’ll want to know that identity and authorization are handled by something more solid than a hopeful API key. When your finance team or a client asks “how do we know the AI agent didn’t overspend or get spoofed,” this alliance is the beginning of an actual answer, backed by the card networks that already run the world’s payment rails.

Nothing here is live yet. It’s standards work, not a product you can turn on. But it’s worth tracking because it tells you which vendors are building agent commerce on rails everyone trusts, versus rails someone made up last week. This is the kind of governance layer we think about when we build an AI command centre for clients, since agents that can act need clear limits on what they’re allowed to touch.
